So far, so good, Garrett thought to himself as he put the finishing touches on the Caprese salad—fresh slices of buffalo mozzarella, tomatoes, basil, seasoned with olive oil, salt, and pepper. He smiled. Harry had genuinely seemed to enjoy walking the house and hadn’t seemed insulted or angered by his showing it off. He turned into a bit of a little boy when it came to showing places he’d designed, and this was one of his favorites. He couldn’t help it, and he wanted Harry to like it.

It was a bit of a relief, actually. Who would’ve thought the devil-may-care playboy architect would be fretting over whether a date liked his house? How far the mighty had fallen.

The salad was usually served as an antipasto, but he’d mistimed the lasagna a bit and now everything was done at once. He brought out the salads and set them down.

“Wow,” Harry said. “Looks delicious.”

“Hold the praise or I’ll get so caught up in listening to it I’ll burn the main dish.” He hurried back into the kitchen and brought out the lasagna. It smelled heavenly.

He carried it out to the dining room and set it down in the center of the table. “Dig in. And please, God, be honest. I hate when people are politely kind. I’d rather have one honest dissenting critique than twenty falsely kind comments.”

Harry tried the lasagna first as Garrett watched him, searching for any sign of body language that would reveal he didn’t like the taste. Harry chewed slowly, staring off out the window at the view of the lake.

“That bad, eh?” Garrett said with a careful smirk. Shit.

“No. It’s really good. I just don’t want to tell you so because I’ll have to hate you more.”

Garrett snorted a laugh. “Well, that’s honest at least.”

“You can cook. You design award-winning buildings. You look great no matter what you wear.” Harry shook his head and grinned. “What’s not to hate?”

“You’re forgetting how egotistical and self-absorbed I am.”

“You’re right. Also how entitled and out of touch with the common man.”

Garrett took a bite of the lasagna. He frowned. It needed more basil. Dammit. “A shame. A guy like me would love to be more in touch with the common man.”

Harry arched an eyebrow and then burst out laughing. “If that’s a double entendre…it really needs work.”

Garrett grinned back. It was good to see Harry relaxed. The man was so tense some times and he hoped that aspect of him wouldn’t show up tonight. It made things awkward, uncomfortable. It didn’t help that he was probably so tense because of the way Garrett had acted when they’d first met—but that was ancient history. Or it should be. He laughed.

Harry eyed him, his smile faltering a bit. “You laughing at my joke, or something else?”

“Just laughing about how we got off to such a bad start.” He lifted his wine and saluted Harry. “To second chances.”

Harry lifted his wine and the crystal chimed as they touched glasses. “To second chances.
